Snow! (and television)

We had our first snow of the season! Well…to be honest, it was only a few flakes for a bit in the morning. Nothing sticking, of course, and it was pretty much a memory by lunchtime. But I saw it! Little flakes of ice water, drifting down to the ground (to melt away). It did break up the slow pace of the morning, though. But that means no pictures are available for viewing, since it doesn’t stick.

I totally forgot to make phone calls this morning, so I need to make lists that I actually look at. I had this long list, but I suppose I can do them tomorrow. At some point. Tomorrow will be pretty busy. We’re going to head to the doctor’s office with my paperwork, to go ahead and get things put in the system, so that it goes more smoothly when I show up in November. Then we are going to head to lunch for Chinese buffet. Then I had planned to do the grocery shopping (because never shop on an empty stomach!). Depending on when I get done with that, maybe THEN I can do the phone calls. Essentially, I am looking to take advantage of all the opportunities that the Family Club in Helsinki have to offer, but I have a few questions. Plus, I saw they were offering another language course that might be more at my level, and I wanted to see if I could switch to it.

I’m going to blame it on going to bed so late last night, and then waking up so late, as well. That’s my excuse story, and I’m sticking to it! Catching up on recorded shows is definitely taking its toll. We’re getting caught up on Big Bang Theory, Agents of SHIELD, The Blacklist, and Castle. I’m going to wait until we’ve recorded a few more episodes of Flash and Gotham before we start watching those. It’s not like we don’t already have enough to watch! I’m excited to hear that House of Cards will be starting back up in February!

I went on a cooking spree this afternoon. I decided to go ahead and cook for the weekend so I don’t have to deal with it. I made some meatloaf, which I will pair with some creamed potatoes later. For dinner, we had rotini and meat sauce. I am still trying to get used to making sauce with powder, water and milk. I’m used to popping open a jar of Ragu and pouring it out. 🙂 But I added some mascarpone cheese to the sauce, and it did add some very nice, rich flavor to it.

Tonight is the Pendragon game, so not going to get much else done for the rest of the evening.

Let’s wander around a bit.

Today was somewhat productive, if not always in the way that I had set out for it to be.

Started off the morning with a series of emails between myself and the TE office. Earlier in the saga, KELA had said that I needed to get documentation from TE that I had attempted to apply there, but was turned down because I didn’t have my residency card yet (this is after they said I should be able to apply with just my Finnish SSN). TE emailed me back and said essentially that KELA had no idea what they were talking about, we don’t do that, so if they want some sort of proof that we’re denying you, use these emails. Not the outcome I wanted, but at least it was a ‘final answer’.

Then, headed down to the Familia Club ry, in order to join up and get enrolled in a Finnish language course. That went well, although I did get turned around a bit, walked all over the City Center, but with the help of Google Maps, finally found my way — retracing steps that I had already done twice before. Apparently, I zigged when I should have zagged. But place found, annual fee paid, registration made. I then read the pamphlet on the bus, and realize that I been signed up for the course so basic it is for folks who do not yet know the Latin alphabet. So, I can be tops in my class! Yay! But, the course does teach some basic Finnish phrases, so I’ll stay in it. It does give me something to do twice a week.

After that, I went to go meet Wellu at the University for lunch, but since I was arriving a bit too early, I decided to go kill some time at the Arabia Mall. A small mall, but there was a nifty discount store that I managed to drop a few shekels in before heading to the safety of the University. We did some rounds of being introduced, then ate lunch and chatted a bit. After that, I went to the grocery store, get dinner stuff and came back to fix said dinner stuff (yes, my life is getting a lot more domestic).

Did find this car in the parking lot. I’ll bet it can be had for cheap :):

After dinner (which actually turned out well, despite my trepidations), I made phone calls back to the States. My mom. My retirement fund company. My bank. My retirement fund company again. The apartment complex re: my deposit (45 days to get it back??), my youngest daughter. I’ve got lots of forms to print out and send off, but hopefully most of the drudge work will be done before I get back to the States for the Thanksgiving break.

Here is a random picture of some of the fall color to finish off the post with. 🙂

Sell, sell, sell!

Sunday, July 13, 2014

Today was a productive day! I didn’t get anything done pet-transport-wise (mentioning that since it has pretty much consumed my thoughts), but I did get a lot done clean-the-apartment-wise. 🙂

Got the youngest’s bedroom mostly cleaned out and sold a bunch of bigger stuff on the local Facebook sites, which makes me feel like progress is being made. Cleaned up a corner of the dining room and have started to stack up packed boxes there in anticipation of my sister’s arrival at the end of the month.

I have a friend set to go with me to pick up the trailer the day before my sister arrives, and tentative commitments from the daughters’ boyfriends to help load it with the furniture stuff, so she and I just have to load boxes. Slowly, slowly, it’s starting to come together. And it’s not even the last minute yet!

Tomorrow’s goal is to fold up and better organize this first wave of garage sale stuff from my closet so that it isn’t dangerously tilting over (and I might even try to sell some of the better stuff via the local Facebook pages), and also be able to add to it as I clean things out. I’ll let you know how successful I am at that. I also have a vision appointment and nail appointment tomorrow, so I will be pressed for time.

My toe, by the way, is swollen, black and blue, and still hurts like a mofo. I am hoping that it has simmered down by tomorrow, because anything other than sneakers is going to hurt pretty bad.
